After cockroach treatment, expect to keep seeing some cockroaches for a while. Most treatments work over days, not minutes. Cockroaches walk through treated cracks or eat bait, then go back into hiding and die there. You may see more of them in the open at first, and young ones can still hatch from eggs already in the house.
Why you can see more cockroaches at first
Cockroaches spend the day packed into cracks, behind the fridge and under the sink. Treated cockroaches often wander out, move slowly, or lie on their backs in open areas. That usually means the product is reaching them, not that the job failed.
The Victorian Department of Health says cockroaches are mostly active at night, so seeing them in the daytime often points to a large infestation. It also explains that dust placed in cracks sticks to their feet and bodies, and they swallow it when they groom. So the effect builds over time.
How long after treatment do cockroaches die?
There is no single clock. It depends on the products used, how many cockroaches there were, and which species you have. Ask the technician what was applied and what timeline to expect, then judge the result against that. Two facts explain why some sightings are normal:
- Egg cases. Cockroach eggs sit inside a hard, purse-shaped case that may be carried, dropped or glued to a surface. Young cockroaches that hatch after the visit still have to find the treated areas or the bait.
- Breeding speed. The same health page says German cockroaches can grow from hatchling to adult in as little as 40 days, with three to four generations a year. If a few survive, numbers can climb again.
The department lists follow-up inspection and monitoring as a step in good cockroach control, so ask whether a follow-up check is part of your plan.
Campsie has a busy run of grocers and restaurants along Beamish Street, with many apartment blocks close by. If a Campsie unit is still seeing small brown cockroaches after the timeline the technician gave, book cockroach control in Campsie so the spots behind appliances and inside cupboards can be checked again.
Does cockroach treatment smell?
It depends on the product. Some leave an odour for a while and some are hard to notice.
The NSW Environment Protection Authority tells technicians that before people re-enter a treated area, it should be well ventilated and free of vapour or smell. It notes that odour, as well as vapour, can affect people's health. The label or safety data sheet sets the re-entry period.
You can also ask for the full product name. The EPA's advice on engaging a pest management technician says a pest controller must give you the safety data sheet for the pesticide on request.
The first day back inside
That EPA advice says to stay out while the pesticide takes effect and keep young children, pregnant women and older people away. Go back in once the area has dried and been well ventilated, and do not eat or drink there until it is safe. Wash your hands before you cook or fill a pet bowl.
What to do after cockroach treatment
Leave treated areas alone long enough to work:
- Do not wipe the treated edges. Keep wet cloths and mops off skirtings, cracks and cupboard corners until the technician or the label says you can.
- Leave bait spots where they are. Small dots of gel near hinges or under the sink are meant to be eaten. Do not scrub them off.
- Hold off on your own sprays. Ask first, because a shop-bought spray can interfere with what was applied.
Then take away what cockroaches need. The Victorian Department of Health says poor hygiene can limit chemical control. It suggests fixing leaking taps and pipes, storing food in sealed airtight containers, emptying bins often with tight lids, and sealing cracks where you can. Clean under the fridge and stove, and do not leave pet food out overnight.
Watch the cardboard too. German cockroaches often spread as stowaways in boxes and crates of food and drink, so get boxes out of the kitchen quickly.
Lakemba's Haldon Street is lined with grocers, bakeries and sweet shops. If cockroaches keep turning up in a Lakemba kitchen after you have sealed food and cleared boxes, book quick cockroach control in Lakemba to find where they are still breeding.
Your cockroach type changes what you will see
German cockroaches are amber, 12 to 15 millimetres long, with two dark stripes behind the head. Most infestations are in kitchens. American cockroaches are reddish-brown and 35 to 40 millimetres long. They tend to live in roof, wall and subfloor spaces and around drains and grease traps, so they may still wander in after the kitchen is treated.
Belmore has a long strip of cafes and restaurants on Burwood Road. If big reddish-brown cockroaches keep coming up through floor drains in a Belmore home, arrange urgent cockroach control in Belmore so the drains, subfloor and wall spaces are checked as well as the kitchen.
When to call back
Call back if you still see many cockroaches in daylight after the timeline you were given, if you find fresh droppings or egg cases, or if young cockroaches show up in new rooms. The Victorian Department of Health notes that German cockroaches seen in bedrooms may mean a large infestation.
Riverwood has many unit blocks around the station and Riverwood Plaza. If a Riverwood unit is finding young cockroaches in the bedrooms weeks after treatment, book fast cockroach control in Riverwood before the next generation grows up.
Before you call, photograph one cockroach, note where and when you saw it, and keep the product name from the visit. Share those details with the local Bankstown pest control team so the next visit starts in the right place.
